This ancient market town is situated in rural Hertfordshire on the border with the County of Essex. It is a modern, lively town with a long and varied history. There is much to see in the town. A rich collection of 16th and 17th century buildings include several of the old inns made famous when the town was an important staging post on the route between London and both Newmarket and Cambridge. The River Stort runs through the centre and is popular with walkers, anglers and visiting narrowboats.
